In Social Studies, students received their folder and test scores yesterday and today. They wrote their scores in their assignment books for you to see and it will either be initialed by me or Mrs. Hedrick (my substitute teacher yesterday). Because of the early release day, I did not get to initial the assignment books of 2-blue class. They did see the test and record the score. If they didn’t have their assignment book, they wrote the information on a piece of paper. All scores have been entered in the STI system. Please check your student’s grades online to see how he or she is progressing.
We will begin our study of Ancient Greece from Chapter 4 in our textbook on Monday. The students will have homework each time they have social studies class. The homework should only take them about 10 minutes to complete. If they say they have finished the homework, please ask to see it as proof.
In Communication Arts, the students will be reading chapters 5, 6, and 7 from Number The Stars this coming week. A writing activity as well as a quiz will be given to go along with the reading. Beginning the middle of the week, the students will be Online Performance Testing for Language Arts, Reading, and Math. It is very important that the students get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast and be here everyday so they can do their very best on this important mid-year test. There will be no spelling assignments or spelling test this week.
In Science, the students are developing an understanding of the difference between thermal and chemical changes in substances. They should understand why salt products are placed on snow and ice covered roadways after completing our lab this week. We will continue investigating matter over the next couple of weeks.
In Mathematics, we took the Chapter 6 test this week, so be sure to ask your student about their score. They did an excellent job! Class averages were 90% before the extra credit. Students turned in their vocabulary from pg. 314 before the test, and received 100 points for it also. If your child didn’t finish their vocabulary, please encourage them to finish and turn it in for partial credit.
We will begin Performance Testing next week in the computer lab, and results will go home in the near future. Have a great weekend!
In Reading Exploratory, please make sure that your student is reading 100 minutes per week, writing three complete summaries, and having you sign the Reading Log (attached). Please have students proofread and edit their summaries if it is not their best work. There will be a reading log due every Friday.

First semester grade cards will go home tomorrow, Friday (1-22-10). Grade cards need to be signed and brought back by Friday (1-29-10).
Third quarter tends to be a time when students take it easy and don’t work their hardest. We have repeatedly told the students that the first four weeks of the first and third quarters are the most important weeks of the school year. Please check your student’s grades online frequently to make sure they stay caught up.
In Social Studies, we are completing our study of Ancient China. The students will be taking the test and turning in their folders on Tuesday (January 26) for blue classes and on Thursday (January 27) for gold classes. The folder will include the following assignments:
1. Chapter 7 Section 1 (attached) (20 points)
2. Chapter 7 Section 2 (attached) (20 points)
3. Chapter 7 Section 3 (attached) (20 points)
4. Chapter 7 Study Guide (attached) (10 points)
5. Chapter 7 Jeopardy (will be completed in class on Friday and Monday) (10 points)
Students may use their foldables on the test.
Please look on the back of your student’s worksheets to see the activities that we have completed in class. Students may use the 10 terms on the bottom of the study guide on the test. They need to write the terms and definitions/descriptions on the back of their foldable.
If you would like the answers to the review to help your student prepare for the test—just e-mail me back and I will send them to you.
In Communication Arts, the students have just started reading, Number The Stars by Lois Lowry. The story is set in Copenhagen, Denmark during 1943 and three years of Nazi occupation have brought changes to the two main characters, Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen. When word comes that the Jewish Danes are to be "relocated", Annemarie and her family take action to help their Jewish friends, the Rosens. An afterward to the story explains how the novel was drawn from true accounts of the Danish Resistance which actually succeeded in saving almost all of Denmark's 8,000 Jews. The students will read the entire novel in class and have several written assignments over the novel, as well as, some quizzes. Mrs. McFarland encourages parents to discuss this book with their child and help them with the some family history on who of their family actually served in World War II. There will be some class time devoted to student's telling about their grandparent's experiences during World War II. This week's Spelling List 7, "Tales from Long Ago", will be tested Thursday, Jan. 28 for Gold Classes and Friday, Jan. 29 for Blue Classes. The test will cover these words:
banish, bedazzled, bedraggled, courteous, famine, hapless, heed, heroine, lineage, majestic, malady, misfortune, pageant, plunder, reign, remedy, romantic, splendor, swoon, and wrath.
In Mathematics, we just took a quiz over the first part of chapter 6. Be sure to ask about your student’s grade! They did a fantastic job. We will be finishing chapter 6 soon. Next week we will review, and probably start testing. Check your student’s assignment book to see when their test will be given. All the chapter vocabulary from page 314 is on the test. Students have completed definitions in class, and need to review them. Pages 314-317 are great test review. There will be several questions on range, mean, median and mode, so be sure to review those also.
Please stock up on paper and pencils. I have several students that are out of both. Have a great weekend!
In Science, the students are studying the states of matter and how states of matter change in specific substances. The differences between chemical and physical changes will soon follow.
In Reading Exploratory, this week’s log will only need two entries instead of three. Students can read for 66 minutes and do two entries for full credit. Please have students proofread and edit their summaries if it is not their best work. Reading logs will be due every Friday.

Paws Team Update
We are preparing for a couple of rewards as Winter Break rapidly approaches. There will be an auction that will take place on Monday, 12-21-09. The students will have the ability to bid (using the cub cash they have accumulated) on various movie posters, Wal-Mart gift cards, and various other items. A list of items, available for auction, was sent home yesterday for a parent/guardian to sign. I have also attached a copy of the list. Students must bring back the Auction Sheet signed by Monday or they will not be able to bid on any items at the auction. The students may only bid on the items that are initialed. On Tuesday, 12-22-09 there will be a movie day the last block of the day.
Have a great and safe Winter Break!

Paws Team Update
Please check the STI system and your student’s grades. Mid-quarter grades will come home next week.
Have a great, safe, and restful Thanksgiving break.
In Social Studies, I was very impressed with the amount of effort put into the Ancient Egypt/Kush-Nubia Projects. I was blown away by some of the amazing talents of the students. I still have 3 students that have not turned a project in yet 0/100 points. Students received their grade sheets on Monday and Tuesday of this week—please ask to see the grade sheet. If they received a zero for any category, they can redo that section and resubmit that part of their project. They must turn in their redone section and the grading sheet on Monday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving. They will receive half-credit for a redone section.
After Thanksgiving, we will begin our study of Ancient India. Students will have a small amount of homework each time they have class.
In Communication Arts, the students have been given the writing activity for the city-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. writing contest explaining that they are to write an essay that tells a personal story about how a person they know (could be them) came to know somebody who was different in some important way, and how that encounter helped one or both people overcome a fear or prejudice or misconception. The essays' rough drafts will be due no later that Wed. Dec. 2 (blue classes) or Thurs. Dec. 23 (gold classes). The final draft will be due on Mon. Dec. 7th. The essays will be picked up at the school by the contest officials on Tues. Dec. 8th to be judged. The winner of the contest wins $100, second runner up receives $50, and the third place winner will get $25. Mrs. McFarland has had winning essays in the past and is hoping that this year will be no different. Good luck sixth graders!
In Math, we are reviewing chapter 4, and will be testing in about a week. Students received Quiz A for chapter 4 this week, and several students scored significantly lower than their average. If parents would like to review the first three lessons with their child, and return a signed note stating they studied, students will be able to take a quiz to replace that grade. The divisibility rules on page 152 are important to know in order to score well on the quiz. Have a great Thanksgiving!
In Science, the students had their Pangaea maps graded. Please check the STI and see that your student completed this assignment appropriately. They could earn 50 points for this activity. We will continue our investigation of earthquakes in class. Next week we will be discovering how to find the location of an earthquakes epicenter and how earthquakes are measured.
In Reading Exploratory, please make sure that your student is reading 100 minutes per week, writing three complete summaries, and having you sign the Reading Log. Please have students proofread and edit their summaries if it is not their best work. Reading logs will be due every Friday.
