In Social Studies, we are beginning our study of Ancient Greek culture. Students will present a project at the completion of our study of Chapter 5. The project and presentation will take the place of the test for Chapter 5. I will attach the project sheet with this e-mail. The project will be similar to the one we completed over Ancient Egypt. Blue classes will get the information about the project on Monday; gold classes got their information sheets today. The projects are due on Friday (3-12) for gold classes and on Monday (3-15) for blue classes. Students will continue to have homework each time they have social studies. Please ask to see the completed assignment for verification.
In Communication Arts, the students have just finished presenting their personal narrative essays to the class. They were very interesting and the students were able to tell why in their presentations why this personal experience was so meaningful to them. Mrs. McFarland has been encouraging the students to write their multiplication facts from 1 to 10 ten times each to receive extra credit points for third quarter in Communication Arts. Carver is really working together to give our students every opportunity to memorize their multiplication facts because it is so important to their success. In Mrs. McFarland's reading classes, she is allowing class time to read for thirty minutes to help the students out with completing their reading logs in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, there are still quite a number of students not turning in the required weekly reading log. Parents, it is so important that your child be reading 100 minutes a week and getting their reading summaries turned in. Again, the practice of reading on a regular basis improves a student's success in all areas of life. MAP Practice assignments and test taking strategies are being incorporated in all of the lessons in the Communication Arts classes. The students are doing quite well on these activities and hopefully this practice time will help the students do their very best on the MAP tests in April.

In SCIENCE, the students are investigating the relationships between time, distance, and speed as we begin our unit on forces and motion. Today we started our first lab related to these topics. The students are responsible for understanding how to solve problems related to these relationships. We have completed a practice problem paper in class that they should study to confirm their understanding of how to successfully complete these types of problems.
In Reading Exploratory, please make sure that your student is reading 100 minutes per week, writing three complete summaries, and having you sign the Reading Log (attached). Please have students proofread and edit their summaries if it is not their best work. There will be a reading log due every Friday.

Paws Team Update
In Social Studies, most of the students did a great job on their crossword puzzle projects. They are still 15 students that have not turned it in as of today. They need to finish, and bring it to me tomorrow. If you are not sure if your student turned it in or not, just check the STI system.
We are completing our study of Chapter 4 over Ancient Greece. The students will be taking the test and turning in their folders on Monday (February 22) for gold classes and on Tuesday (February 23) for blue classes. The folder will include the following assignments:
1. Chapter 4 Section 1 (attached) (20 points)
2. Chapter 4 Section 2 (attached) (20 points)
3. Chapter 4 Section 3 (attached) (20 points)
4. Chapter 4 Section 4 (attached) (20 points)
5. Chapter 4 Study Guide (attached) (10 points)
6. Chapter 4 Jeopardy (will be completed in class on Thursday and Friday) (10 points)

Please look on the back of your student’s worksheets to see the activities that we have completed in class. Students may use the 10 terms on the bottom of the study guide on the test. They need to write the terms and definitions/descriptions on a separate sheet of paper or they can use them from their crossword puzzles.

All students should be finished with their rough draft and working on their final copies. The final copy is due no later than Monday February 22. Next week's spelling list includes these words: antiquity, bust, continuity, debate, destined, dungeon, embark, establish, falcon, fashionable, flee, invade, martyr, oppress, preserved, prevail, rebellious, related, subdue, and vague. Spelling Test 9 will be next Thursday 25th for Blue Classes and Friday, 26th for Gold Classes.
In Mathematics, we will finish chapter 7 next week. Then Blue classes will test on March 1st and Gold classes with test on March 2nd. The test will include the vocabulary on page 384, so it would be a good idea to start studying now. Time is flying! Mid-quarters will come home next week, and we will be MAP testing in a month!
Please check your students supply list. Many students are coming to class without pencils and paper. Have a great weekend!

Paws Team Update

The Carver PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) is looking for volunteers! Opportunities range from holding an officer position to helping out at an event to bringing donations of food for teacher events. If you are interested in being added to our email list (emails come approximately 1-2 times a month) to get information on volunteer activities, please email Kristina Brown, PTSA Secretary at kristinasbrown@aol.com. If you are interested in attending our Carver PTSA Meetings, they are held on the second Monday of each month from 6-7pm in the Carver Library.

In Communication Arts, the students have been given two graphic organizers to fill out for Tuesday 16th (Gold) and Wednesday 17th (Blue) to get them started on their rough drafts of their personal narrative. Mrs. McFarland has asked the students to show their graphic organizer to their parents and get them signed before next week. It would be great if parents could add some details to the ideas that their child has brought forth. The 6+1 Writing Traits that will be emphasized in the activity are "Voice" and "Organization". The students will read their completed personal narratives to the class the week of February 22nd. For some reason, the students this week have had a difficult time turning in their Number The Stars journal entry so please check with your child to make sure that they have theirs completed and turned in.
In Mathematics, we are still studying chapter 7. The test will not be until the last week of February, but there are 41 vocabulary words that go with this chapter. I have given the students class time and exploratory time to do the definitions, so they should all have a study guide completed. It would be great to start practicing the definitions now! All of the words will be on the test, and knowing the definitions will be a great help on the test concepts, too.
Please check your child’s grade. Students are doing an excellent job! Right now we have a 94% average! If your student doesn’t have a good grade, please check that they are current with all work and studying their vocabulary. Keep up the hard work!

The students should have notes and several handouts to help them review for the test. The past two classes have included experiments relating to chemical and physical changes in matter. Ask your child to explain what they did and what happened.

Paws Team Update
In Social Studies, we are beginning our study of Ancient Greece. We began this unit by writing a map checklist of Europe and Ancient Greece and the students labeled their maps of Europe and Ancient Greece using the checklist. Students turned those in on Wednesday and Thursday (today). I have many students that haven’t turned in their map or checklist for Greece. Please check the STI system to see if your student has completed and turned in the work. The map work was worth 30 points (10 points for writing the checklist and 20 points for the maps). The maps need to be labeled and the Europe side needs to be shaded.
The students were given information about their crossword puzzle project that will be due for Gold classes on Tuesday (2-16-10) Blue classes on Wednesday (2-17-10). We will start another writing activity following this one where the students will be writing a personal narrative describing an actual event that has taken place in their life such as the birth of a brother or sister, winning an important game, singing in a musical, doing something for someone else, etc. There will be no Spelling Test this week or next week due to the Online Performance Testing which has played havoc with our schedule.
In Mathematics, we are studying geometry in chapter 7. Most of this is review, but there are many vocabulary words that will be tested. It would be a good idea to start reviewing them. We have several lessons to go before we think about a test date. Gold classes took their Performance Test in the computer lab Wednesday. Be sure to ask your student about their results. Blue classes will take their test on Monday, February 8.
